A lone strike by defender Ashleigh Plumptre was all the Super Falcons needed to qualify for the 2026 Women African Cup of Nations on a 3-1 aggregate win over Benin Amazons.
Esther Okonkwo set up the goal with a flick into the box and Plumptre guided in the ball with a brilliant header in the match decided at MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The Benin Amazon cancelled the goal in the 80th minute.
The first leg played in Lome, Togo ended in 2-0 win for the Super Falcons who will now prepare to the defend the 2024 title they won in Morocco in July.
They famously beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final game to win their 10th title after going down 2-0 in the first half.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons are still waiting to be paid the $100,000 promised to them by President Bola Tinubu. Despite claims by the National Sports Commission the ladies have been paid, it was gathered from the players in Abeokuta, the Tinubu largese is yet to ‘invade’ their bank accounts.
