Nine Nigeria army soldiers detained for collaborating with Boko Haram insurgent elements have escaped from custody at the heavily fortified Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State,
Their escape is seen as a set back by top Nigerian army commanders in the fight against Boko Haram. The escaped soldiers were allegedly involved in arms trafficking to terrorist groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East.
“There was a jailbreak on Monday around 0215 hours at the military Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State. Nine personnel detained mostly for dealing in arms running with terrorists escaped,” a military source told SaharaReporters.
“One of them was arrested after the incident in the bush. It’s a very major security breach, imagine something like this happening inside a military barracks, so shameful.”
The Nigeria army has grappled with the cases of its officers colluding with terrorists over the course of time.
