Two of the three teenage seminarians kidnapped by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Ivhianokpodi in Etsako Local government area of Edo State have regained their freedom. But one other was not so lucky, he was killed by their captors.
The three seminarians Japhet Jesse, Joshua Aleobua and Emmanuel Alabi who are between the ages of 14-17, were kidnapped by the herdsmen who stormed their Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi on July 10, 2025 in large numbers.
While Japhet was released a few weeks later Joshua and Emmanuel were held back.
But on November 4, 2025 Joshua made it back home, while Emmanuel unfortunately was killed.
“We are grateful to God for the safe release of Japhet Jesse much earlier and, most recently, Joshua Aleobua, who regained his freedom on November 4, 2025,” said a press release by the Auchi Catholic diocese.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who lost his life in the course of the ordeal.
“Bishop Gabriel Dunia of Auchi “expressed his deep pain and sorrow over the loss of the young seminarian, and has called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting the lives and property of all citizens.
“He also cautioned political leaders against turning a blind eye on the worsening insecurity situation in the nation, urging them instead to prioritize the safety and well-being of the people over political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.”
Meanwhile, five persons were kidnapped from the same community recently.
