Malians have been left in shock following the execution of a popular TikTok influencer Mariam Cisse who was kidnapped and later shot dead in front of her family members.
Cisse a young woman in her 20’s with 100,000 followers was shooting one of her videos when she was forcibly taken away by jihadists suspected to be members of the Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin.
She often posted videos about life in her Tonka hometown in the northern Timbuktu region and often expressed support for the army; she wore military uniform in some of her clips.
Mali has been battling to contain the jihadist group that also have cells in countries like Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon.
Mali is currently battling a blockade imposed by the jihadist groups on the capital Bamako.
“My sister was arrested Thursday [November 6] by the jihadists” as he said they had accused her of “informing the Malian army of their movements,” said Cisse’s brother.
“Mariam Cisse has been assassinated in a public square in Tonka by jihadists who accused her of having filmed them for the Malian army.”
