Six people have been confirmed dead and many others injured following a stampede at an army recruitment exercise in Accra, Ghana Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at the El Wak Stadium venue of the recruitment drive. The Ghana Armed Forces said in a statement that the stampede was caused by the large number of applicants who overwhelmed safety protocol and rushed into the stadium ahead of the scheduled screening at about 06:20 hours.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured. The injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital. Ghana Armed Forces assures the general public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise affected individuals,” said the GAF statement
Meanwhile, investigators have blamed bad weather for the crash of a military helicopter which killed two Ghanaian ministers and six others.
Ghana was thrown into mourning in August when the Z9 military helicopter smashed hard on the ground in a dense forest as it was flying from the capital, Accra, to the town of Obuasi in August. There were no survivors.
After a two-month probe, investigators found that the aircraft lost altitude and lift due to “downdraft”, a downward current of air.
The helicopter was “airworthy”, the report added but recommended the Ghana Air Force fleet be modernised as it currently lacks modern safety and navigational systems.
Top government officials who died in the crash include Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
