Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters said they have executed a Nigerian army commander, Brigadier-General M. Uba who was captured during an ambush.
A convoy, led by Brigadier-General Uba of the 25 Task Force Brigade, was returning from a patrol near Wajiroko village in northeastern Borno state late on Friday when it came under sustained gunfire, Military authorities confirmed that two soldiers and two CJTF operatives were killed during the attack.
ISWAP said in a statement posted on its Amaq propaganda channel, claimed responsibility for the ambush and said it had executed the army officer identified as a brigade commander following an interrogation.
The Nigeria army in a statement had denied that the General was captured, but sources confirmed that the terrorists tracked him down after he contacted his superiors and to assure them, he was safe in a certain location and waited to be rescued.
“The Brigadier General who was abducted managed to send his live location to colleagues,” a senior military source revealed.
“They traced it and found the spot, but there was no trace of him. It’s unclear if his phone died or was seized by the terrorists.”
