For most elite Nigerian track and field athletes, they should have been on holiday after the 2025 World Championships, but now they are struggling with their form at the Islamic Solidarity Games on going in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Back in the days, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria invited up and coming athletes for the ISG, so that they can get exposure. But now the lure to win and brag, for the government to believe they are working made the federation fall back on the already established athletes.
But it’s been quite a stretch for the elite athletes. Throwers Obiageri Pamela Amaechi who won silver in the women’s discus and Chioma ‘CiCi’ Onyekwere who was fourth in the same event spoke their feelings.
“It has been a hectic season, and I had planned to rest and reboot ahead of next year and the Commonwealth Games,” said Amaechi who threw 56.99m well below her personal best of 64.80m she achieved in August 2025.
“But when Nigeria calls, you have to answer. My body has already shut down for the season, so getting here took a lot. I would have loved to push for gold or near my PB, but I’m proud to represent my country.”
Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie, won gold with a throw of 57.04m.
Also speaking Onyekwere added:
“I’m happy to be here, but I wish I could have done better,” Chioma said. “My body just couldn’t respond. I was already preparing for my break before the invite came, and I arrived only a day before the event due to a tight schedule.
Now I just want to rest and prepare for next season with full focus on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”
