Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu has been convicted by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on three counts of terrorism charges.
Mr. Kanu was arraigned on seven count charge of terrorism by the Federal Government.
In his ruling Thursday, presiding judge Justice James Omotosho, stated that evidence presented by the prosecution, videos and interview in which Kanu made threats against Nigeria proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Kanu was found guilty on counts one and two of making broadcast to incite violence in his agitation for the Biafra. The court added that threats of violence and killings perpetuated in the Southeast amount to terrorism.
It also found Kanu guilty on counts four and five of inciting violence during the #EndSARS protests, resulting in the killing of security personnel and the destruction of government properties in Lagos.
“The right to self-determination is a political right. Any self-determination not done according to the constitution of Nigeria is illegal,” Judge James Omotosho said.
“A person who is found guilty of the offence will get a maximum of a death sentence.”
Later in sentencing the IPOB leader Justice James Omotosho stated that though Kanu deserved to get a death sentence as the offence warranted and coupled with his lack of remorse the court has mercifully sentenced him to life imprisonment.
