The nationally acclaimed Warri Effurun Peace Marathon will make a big return in 2026 after two seasons of absence in the Nigerian road race circuit.
Due to construction works on the routes of the race and renovation at the finish point, the event was shelved till further notice, but as the coast seems clear in the city of Warri, the Warri Effurun Peace Marathon organisers are back to the drawing board.
“The race would be back in 2026 and we are working towards making a big comeback,” said Dr. Mrs Joyce Bozimo chief organiser.
“Over the years athletes and coaches all over Nigeria had looked forward to the race but we couldn’t run it in 2024 and 2025 due to circumstances beyond our control. But Warri and Effurun roads are taking shape, we are working towards 2026.
“We are organising this event for peace, which embraces everyone, it is a race to promote friendship and peace…our message is “Let’s run in peace.”
The 10km race opened to all elite runners and fun seekers. Before the break, had gone on for seven years becoming a destination for most Nigerian long distance runners.
“I have always loved to race in Warri, the organisers are honest with prize money payment, the routes are friendly, the people are friendly, at last edition a man gifted me money for winning.
“I can’t wait to return there next year by the grace of God,” said elite runner Ismael Sadjo of Cross River State.
