Cameroonian resistance to despot Paul Biya seems to have crumble following the exile of opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary.
The government of Gambia said in a statement on Sunday that it is offering Mr. Tchiroma a temporary refuge on humanitarian ground. Tchiroma who is wanted by the Cameroonian authorities for inciting violence arrived in Banjul on November 7, 2025.
“He is being hosted temporarily in The Gambia purely on humanitarian grounds in the spirit of African solidarity and for the purpose of ensuring his safety while discussions continue to pursue a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the post-electoral tensions in Cameroon,” The Gambian government said in a statement.
Mr. Tchiroma claimed to have won the October 12, 2025, Cameroon presidential election, which the country’s constitutional council declared the incumbent for 42 years, Paul Biya winning with 53.7 percent of the vote, while Tchiroma came second with 35.2 percent. Tchiroma accused Biya and his cronies of rigging the election.
More than 16 people were killed and property destroyed in the post-election violence. Tchiroma first took refuge in Yola, Adamawa State Nigeria before moving to Gambia.
Biya, 92, has since been sworn-in to begin his 8th term in office making him the oldest President in the world.
