Jamaican born reggae legend, James Chambers a.k.a Jimmy Cliff has died at 81.
His wife Latifa Chambers announced Monday that Cliff died after suffering from seizures.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia.
“I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes,” Chambers said in a statement post on Instagram.
Jimmy Cliff was the last surviving of the reggae greats like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh who made the genre a worldwide accepted music.
Jimmy Cliff was born in 1944; he grew up as the eighth of nine children in abject poverty in the parish of St. James, Jamaica. Blessed with a sweet, mellifluous voice, he began singing at his local church at the age of six.
Some of his ever-green songs include “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” “I Can See Clearly Now,” “Wonderful World, Beautiful People.”
He starred in the move the “Harder they Come” in 1972, “Club Paradise” in 1986 and “Marked for Death,” 1990. He also soundtrack for “Cool Runner.”
