Five students at the Rivers State University Nkpolu-Oroworukwu near Port Harcourt have been abducted and taken to an unknown destination by gunmen suspected to be cultists.
According to the River State Police spokesperson SP. Grace Iringe-Koko, the incident occurred at about 2.00am Tuesday morning when the gunmen about five in number invaded the off-campus hostel of the RSU in Rumuchi/Rumuohia in Emuoha local government area.
“ In the early hours of Tuesday a group of cultists numbering five stormed an isolated area of Rumuchi/Rumuohia, shot and abducted five persons to an unknown destination,” SP Iringe-Koko.
“We (police) have put efforts in place for their safe rescue. As I speak, the Commissioner of Police has gone there with tactical teams to ensure they regain their freedom.”
One of the students who escaped despite being shot at narrated: She said, “One of the gunmen was running after me and even shot at me. I don’t know how many times. I couldn’t even look back because I was more focused on escaping.
“So the person just stopped and went back. Some of our students, about five or so, are missing now.”
