In the last roll of the dice perhaps Aston Villa Saturday consigned Arsenal to their first defeat of the season and ushering the usual December slum for the London club.
The Gunners missed the chance to extend their Premier League lead after failing to beat 10-man Chelsea last week and Aston Villa deservingly earn the full points with Emi Buendia’s stoppage goal to bring scores to 2-1.
Villa had taken the lead through Matty Cash and Leandro Trossard levelled up before Buendia’s shot to the roof of the net after Arsenal failed to clear.
Arsenal still lead the table with 33 points, Manchester City 31 points and Villa are third with 28 points after 15 matches.
“We were very dominant, but then the same issues returned,” Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta groaned.
“We allowed certain opponents too much space. We gave the ball away ourselves, to the point where it could have cost us the game, before it actually did.
“Every week will be like this. We are 18 games unbeaten and the margins are so small. We have to focus on ourselves and certain standards today – individual levels weren’t there in some cases. We have to go again.
“Consistency levels with everything that happened to us has been incredible. I have no arguments to think otherwise.”
