The Nigeria Air Force has confirmed the crash of its Alpha Jet Saturday in Karabonde, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The aircraft developed problems shortly after takeoff and according to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the two pilots on board did well to avoid causalities on ground and also safely ejecting themselves from the aircraft before it crash landed and burst into flames.
“We commend the coordinated response of fire and crash units, medical teams, and other base personnel who secured the site and supported the recovery efforts,” Air Marshal Aneke said in a statement.
“The incident occurred shortly after take-off during a post-inspection functional check flight at NAF Base Kainji.
“The pilots kept their composure, maneuvered the aircraft away from populated areas, and executed a safe ejection,” he said.
Both pilots were evacuated to Abuja by the search and rescue teams and are undergoing routine medical evaluation.
“The Nigerian Air Force reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to stringent safety standards and operational excellence.
“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement added.
The NAF’s Alpha Jets are primarily used for training and air-to-ground missions and have been deployed extensively in internal security operations across the country.
