Governors hard hit by bandits and terror gangs in the northern and central part of Nigeria have each pledged to contribute N1 billion every month to push back on insecurity in their domain.
The Northern Governors Forum agreed during a recent meeting to establish the security fund to enable region to engage personal, set up agencies and purchase equipment.
“One of the major decisions we have taken is to agree on a one-billion-naira monthly contribution to a security fund,” said Nasarawa State governor Abdullahi Sule.
“So, the 19 Northern governors will be contributing N19 billion every month for 12 months. We had to take this fight against insecurity on our own in order to secure our region. Otherwise, you know, we will continue to talk about it and nothing will happen.”
“The money will be used in various areas, including the purchase of equipment necessary for fighting insecurity and the engagement and employment of youths who will be properly trained to support us as vigilantes.”
He added that Ezekiel Gomos a former Secretary to the Plateau State Government, will manage the fund and coordinate the efforts of the northern governors to end insecurity.
