Seven women have been killed and several others injured after soldiers allegedly opened fire on protesters demonstrating against violence in Lamurde, Adamawa State.
The shooting occurred Monday afternoon at Rigange junction where the women were protesting the violent assault by Chobo-speaking militia who had launched attacks in many communities in Lamurde.
According to reports by SaharaReporters the soldiers who shot at the protesting women were in the entourage of Brigade Commander, Amechi Agwu, of the 23 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Yola.
“The women were angry, frustrated, and tired of burying their dead. They were demanding answers. Instead, what they got were bullets,” a member of the Lamurde community said.
He said 12 women were shot at, seven died instantly.
“Five others are battling for their lives at Numan General Hospital,” he said, his voice breaking as he recounted the chaos that followed the shooting.
The Nigeria army is yet to respond to the allegations.
Meanwhile the Adamawa State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Lamurde Local Government Area and surrounding communities.
Adamawa State governor Umaru Fintiri had last week tried to intervene in the conflict between the Bachama and Chobo communities.
According to local sources, the fresh round of violence broke out Sunday, 7 December 2025, when heavily armed attackers invaded Waduku, Rigange, Tingo, and other nearby settlements, overwhelming the communities.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants were armed with weapons more sophisticated than those carried by the military personnel deployed to maintain peace. Many residents fled in panic, seeking safer locations as gunshots continued to ring out across the affected areas.
