Despite scoring 20 goals in a fruitless World Cup campaign the Super Eagles attack has been given a low mark ahead of the African Cup of Nations.
Veteran coach Claude Le Roy who won the AFCON in 1988 with Cameroon and coached in Togo, Ghana, Senegal and Congo DR, said the Super Eagles attacking line up featuring Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze have not been tested against top African teams.
“We need to put things into perspective,” he told Canal+ in an interview.
“It’s not against irresistible teams, but against Benin and Gabon in the World Cup qualifiers.”
“When you are Nigeria and you don’t qualify for the World Cup, I’m not impressed by the statistics of 20 goals in 12 matches, given the offensive potential they have.”
However, he noted that if the strikers can raise their game at AFCON they can be a threat.
He said coach Éric Chelle will struggle to motivate the team at the AFCON.
“The elimination greatly handicaps him (Chelle) in his preparation for this AFCON,” Le Roy added.
