Nigerian coaches have been warned not to rush into taking jobs in the national team set ups without signing a contract.
Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau handed the warning saying, too many Nigerian coaches who served with national teams have carried on without a contract and at the end of their time came back to claim, the football ruling house owed them money.
“It is wrong for any coach to join the national team without signing a contract. This is because at the end of the day you have no evidence of working for the NFF said Mr. Gusau during a chat with Segun Odegbami on Eagles 7 FM.
“So many coaches have bombarded us with claims that we are owing them money, and I ask them show me evidence, but none of them cannot produce one.
“I cannot use NFF funds which is public money to pay for something, which is not contracted or documented. Coaches like late Christian Chukwu and many others complained they owed money, and I say show me evidence.
“This has become a problem, and we must begin to put things in proper perspective.”
Meanwhile contract or no contract the NFF is known to have a penchant for starving coaches of their salary and bonuses. Last week it emerged that the NFF is owing Coach Eric Chelle three months of back pay.
The NFF president explained that the nation’s soccer ruling house is always in the red, because money coming from FIFA, CAF, sponsors and the Federal government does not come in at the time when it is needed most.
“It is only when we have money we can pay,” Gusau added.
