President Bola Tinubu may have made a U-turn in his bid to rapidly promote his Aide-De-Camp (ADC) Colonel Nurudeen Yusuf to the rank of a Brigadier-General.
According to reports by The Cable, this is coming after a group of a retired senior army officer prevailed on the President to have a rethink of the move to avoid disaffection in the rank and file of the army.
Yusuf had just been promoted to the rank of Colonel in January 2025 and needed another three years to be eligible for promotion to a higher level.
Military sources said the proposed promotion had drawn criticism from experts who described it as a dangerous precedent.
“He got the president to sign a memo for the promotion of officers who were due for retirement after failing three times as specified by their rules.
“When the president was told of the implications regarding rule, he withdrew the memo but nonetheless asked that the officers be allowed to remain in service, citing the emergency he just declared; they are still in service, I understand,” a military source told The Cable.
