Nigeria’s Super Eagles were dominant in their 3-2 win over Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles Saturday night’s group C tie of the Africa Cup of Nations in Fez, Morocco.
With the result the Super Eagles have advanced into the knockout stage of the tournament with Uganda still to come.
From the onset the Super Eagles took firm control of the game with penetrating onslaught into the Tunisian area. Victor Osimhen had a goal ruled out for offside leaving him furious, having timed his run to meet Alex Iwobi’s through ball.
However, he got his reward in the 44th minute when he bent over backwards beating his two markers in the air to give a head to Ademola Lookman’s delightful cross from the left.
At the break the Super Eagles turned the screws on the Tunisians, Wilfred Ndidi scored with another header in the 50 minutes from a corner delivery from Lookman. It was Ndidi’s first Super Eagles goal in his 73 appearances for the national team.
Provider Lookman turned goal scorer in the 67 minutes after he connected with an inviting pass made by Osimhen from a cut back.
Thinking the game was all wrapped up, coach Erick Chelle pulled out Frank Onyeka and introduced Chigozie Awaziem, Simon Moses came in for Akor Adams, while Chidera Ejuike replaced Lookman.
Those changes seem to have taken the steam from the Super Eagles, Tunisia launched a fight back they were instantly rewarded as Stanley Nwabali failed to deal with a Montassar Talbi’s header off a free kick in the 74th minute.
VAR awarded a penalty for a Bright Samuel-Osayi handball and Ali Al-Abdi sent Nwabali the wrong way to score their second goal in the 87th minute.
The Super Eagles managed to run down the clock to earn a well deserved win. They will play Uganda on Tuesday in Fez.
