A light earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 was felt Saturday in areas near Morocco’s capital Rabat, with no reports of injuries or material damage, according to seismic monitoring websites.
The tremor was recorded at 3:18 p.m. local time, the sources said. Its epicenter was located about 6.3 kilometers northeast of Rabat, in the Dar Essalam area of the Rabat Salé Kenitra region.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 17 kilometers below the surface, which explains why it was only weakly felt by some residents living close to the epicenter, while many people in more distant areas reported no sensation.
Seismic monitoring platforms received a limited number of reports from residents who said they felt a brief, mild shaking. Authorities reported no disruption to infrastructure or essential services.
The tremor was classified as minor and falls within the category of low magnitude earthquakes that are periodically recorded in Morocco, particularly along the country’s northern seismic belt, which is known for light to moderate seismic activity. Hespress reports.
