Super Eagles top striker Victor Osimhen after leading the Super Eagles to a 3-1 win over Uganda in their last group C game said that he has no interest in pursuing Nigeria’s all time goal scoring record at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Osimhen who turned 27 on Monday, needs six more goals to eclipsed late Super Eagles striker Rashidi Yekini’s 37 goals haul from 62 games. Oshimen said he still have a long stretch of games ahead of him and he is in no rush to think about goals record. So far, he has played 48 games for the Super Eagles.
“I’m not thinking about equaling or surpassing Rashidi Yekini’s record for now; it’s all about the team,”
“I am trying to fight for my team to get goals, assists, but yes, hopefully not this AFCON and maybe not the qualifiers, but one day I know I am going to get there.”
Meanwhile, Osimhen praised the contributions of fellow striker Paul Onuchua in Tuesday’s win over the Cranes of Uganda. Onuachu had struggled to find his form in games for Nigeria, but against Uganda he proved that he could partner with Osimhen as he scored his first goal of the AFCON. Onuachu making a comeback to team after a long absence has scored four goals from 27 appearances.
“Paul Onuachu is family to me. I’ve known Paul for so many years. I’m happy about his first goal and how well he played.”
Speaking on his role as captain Osimhen added: “It feels so good. For me, it is beautiful to try to lead the team,” he said. “I think I have gained some level of experience to be able to lead the team, and the coach also confides in me, as well as the players.”
“So, they listen to me just like I listen to them also. For me, I think it gives me great pleasure and privilege because during the time I led the boys out they won the game, then we were also through to the Round of 16.”
