Former world heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua continues to recover in an undisclosed Lagos hospital following the tragic auto crash that claimed the lives of his two association on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway near Sagamu, Ogun State.
The car driven by a yet to be identified a local driver, suffered a burst tyre due to excessive speed, lost control and rammed into a truck. Joshua’s friends Kevin Ayodele and Sina Ghami died on the spot, while he was extricated from the wreckage of the Lexus SUV and rushed to the hospital.
According to reports by Vanguard, the police are now thinking of slamming a reckless driving charge against the driver of the doomed vehicle. He escaped on unhurt in the horror crash, as his side of the vehicle was not impacted much like the passenger’s front and back seats where the deceased sat. Joshua sat behind the driver’s seat hence his lucky escape.
A source hinted that investigators are finalising documentation for the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division, which is working with prosecutors to determine appropriate charges. Prosecution for dangerous or reckless driving causing death is said to be under consideration.
Joshua who cried that he was feeling pains everywhere when he was brought out of the vehicle is said to be in stable condition with his mother by his side. His family in Sagamu said they were shocked by the incident, saying the Olympic gold medalist for Great Britain usually came home more than four times in a year.
“We did not know on time that he was involved in an accident, it was really a rude shock to the family because this is not the first time he would be coming to see his family in Sagamu,” Joshua’s uncle Adedamola Joshua said.
“Anthony Joshua can even come home up to three, four times in a year. We felt so bad because this is the end of the year period which is usually used to rejoice and bond with one another, it is really quite unfortunate.
Joshua was due to face Tyson Fury in a long-awaited showdown between the two great British Heavyweights. However, boxing promoter Frank Warren has warned that Joshua may never fight again after being involved in the crash.
