The political tussle between Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike took a new twist Thursday with the Rivers State House of Assembly moving a motion for the impeachment of the governor and his deputy.
Speaker of the House Martins Amaewhule and 25 other members loyal to Wike at a plenary session read the impeachment notice to governor Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odu. According to them the impeachment notice would be served on the governor within seven days.
This latest twist to the Rivers State politcal logjam can be linked to Fubara’s endorsement for a second term in office by the All Progressive Congress party.
Wike who is the Minister of the Federal Captial Territory had argued that part of the peace deal between him and Fubara entails that the sitting governor drop any ambition of running for a second term.
Political observers believe that it was Wike who orchestrated the six months suspension of governor Fubara, his deputy and the 26 member assembly in 2025 by President Bola Tinubu who declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Since his return to the seat Fubara faced more antagonistic reception from the house of assembly members and from all indication the Hon Amaewhule lead house are bent on removing Fubara to please Wike.
They accused governor Fubara of gross misconduct and illegal actions which violated the Nigerian Constitution.
According to the speaker: “The particulars of gross misconduct have a lot to do with refusal to present a budget and spending outside the appropriation law.”
