The United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres said it was regrettable the United States decided to withdraw from 66 international organisations.
US President Donald Trump Wednesday signed presidential memorandum to withdraw his country from a total of 66 international organizations, including 31 under the United Nations, prompting the UN to issue a public statement expressing regret.
“We express regret over the White House’s announcement regarding the U.S. decision to withdraw from multiple UN agencies” Mr. Guterres, said through a spokesperson.
“As we have consistently emphasized, contributions to the UN regular budget and peacekeeping budget, approved by the General Assembly, are a legal obligation under the UN Charter for all member states, including the United States,” and stressed, “All UN agencies will continue their mandates entrusted by member states.”
He further stated, “The UN has a responsibility to deliver results for those who depend on us,” and affirmed, “We will resolutely continue our mission.”
The day before, Trump withdrew from organizations related to climate, peace, and human rights, stating, “Participation in these organizations runs counter to U.S. interests.” The list included the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Democracy Fund, UN Conference on Trade and Development, and some regional commissions under the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Since taking office in January of last year, Trump has pursued an “America First” policy, closing the U.S. International Development Agency and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement and the WHO (World Health Organization).
