Nigerian singer Portable has been denied bail following his arraignment before a Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State.
Portable was arraigned on Monday over multiple criminal charges, including assault, resisting arrest, and obstruction of police officers.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the singer was arrested and remanded after his court appearance.
“Yes, he was arraigned and remanded yesterday,” Babaseyi told journalists on Tuesday.
The singer’s arraignment followed the circulation of a viral video showing him shirtless, handcuffed and visibly distressed while seated in what appeared to be a police holding facility.
Police said Portable was arrested over allegations of assault against actress and skit maker Omobolarinde Akinyanju, popularly known as Ashabi Simple, one of his baby mamas and mother of two of his children.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on New Year’s Day at the singer’s bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area of Ogun State, where Portable allegedly attacked Ashabi, police officers and other individuals.
Other alleged victims listed in the charge include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah.
The prosecution also accused the singer of stealing a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at ₦12 million, reportedly belonging to Ileyemi Damilola and linked to a car dealer, Wally Dex Auto.
During proceedings, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, although Ashabi herself was absent from court.
Police further alleged that Portable assaulted and obstructed a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was carrying out her official duties.
Ruling on the bail application, the presiding judge declined to grant bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court.
The court ordered that the officer must be present before the bail request could be considered and remanded Portable in custody, adjourning the bail hearing to January 19.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into a separate viral video allegedly showing the singer being assaulted while in custody.
