Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle said he is unsure what his future holds with the Super Eagles, after his team’s good run at the Africa Cup of Nations came to an end in Rabat with a 4-2 penalty loss to hosts Morocco Wednesday night.
Chelle is reported to be a target for Tunisia who are looking for a coach to guide their team at the 2026 World Cup and are said to be ready to pay $100,000.
Speaking in Rabat after the game Chelle said his staying depends on the Nigeria Football Federation.
“My future, now, I don’t know, I’m the coach of Nigeria, maybe in a few days my president will tell me, “It’s finished for you’ or, ‘you have to continue’, so I don’t know,” Chelle said.
Chelle joined the Super Eagles September 2024 to revamp Nigeria’s failing World Cup qualification campaign, which ironically came crashing down in Morocco, when they lost 4-2 on penalty to Congo DR during the playoffs.
Speaking on semi-final game Chelle said his team was not at his best adding that all the penalty takers were the best the team has to present.
“Technically, we were not at the level of our previous matches. I won’t blame fatigue, but we lacked movement and power,” Eric Chelle said.
“Since the beginning of this Africa Cup of Nations, every day at every training session we have done penalty sessions and statistically the players who took the penalties were the best, and that’s why we made changes to bring in the players who were going to shoot. Chukwueze came on to take his penalty and even though he didn’t score.”
He added that the team will be ready to face Egypt on Saturday for the third-place match.
“We have a last game against Egypt, I’m proud of my players but I’m disappointed for them because the reality is maybe we were the best team, maybe, in this Afcon, we go out with pride.
“So, the question about my situation, no, we have to stay focused on the third game [against Egypt] and we have to win this game.”
