Nigeria’s Super Eagles will miss the services Calvin Bassey as they prepare to face Egypt’s Pharaohs in Saturday’s third place match of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Bassey picked up a needless and perhaps unjustified yellow card after he was booked by Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea in the semi-final game against hosts Morocco. Bassey was fouled by Brahim Diaz, but surprisingly Mr. Laryea flashed the yellow card to Bassey. It was one his many questionable whistling of an otherwise interesting game.
The Fulham of England defender has been one of the most outstanding players of the tournament. Chigozie Awaziem and Semi Ajayi are now expected to pair in the centre defence for the Supe Eagles.
“Yes, Calvin will not play this game,” Chelle said during his press conference.
“We are a group and each player will have the chance to show what they can do. Calvin had a great AFCON but there are some players who can take his position. I have to find the best player for the team in this game.”
Also, Victor Osimhen is a doubt for the game after picking up an injury in the semi-final clash against Morocco.
Nigeria lost to Egypt in a friendly game before the AFCON, they need to win the game to maintain Nigeria’s strong tradition of finishing the AFCON without winning a medal.
