Nigerians continue to suffer from inadequate and irregular power supply as the first national power grid collapse of 2026 occurred on Friday.
Throughout the country there was blackout as power was lost in all generating plants connected to the grid. Distributions companies were left high and dry, while power consumers turned to their generating sets.
In 2025 more than 12 system collapse where recorded; on December 29 the system collapsed four different times. And it seems the Federal government has no clue on how to increase generating capacity and upgrade transmission and distribution network.
Grid collapses have been attributed to a combination of technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission lines, and fluctuations in generation capacity.
The cause of the collapse could not be immediately determined, and officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria had yet to issue a detailed statement at the time of filing this report.
A notice from Abuja Electric to customers noted that “gradual restoration of supply” has commenced.
