Arsenal title push has taken a hit after in-form Manchester United snatch a 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium to blow the Premier League title race wide open on Sunday.
Matheus Cunha scored the winning goal with six minute to go after Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute via an own goal by United defender Lisandro Martinez.
Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a horror backpass by Martin Zubmendi to draw United level before Patrick Dorgu unleashed a stunning strike five minutes after half-time.
Mikel Merino looked to have rescued a valuable point for Arsenal when he prodded home from a corner with six minutes to go.
But substitute Cunha made the Gunners pay for missed opportunities for the first time in front of their fans this season and is set to cast significant doubt over their hopes of ending their 22-year wait for the title. Manchester City and Aston Villa are now only just four points behind Arsenal’s 50.
“That’s part of the demands and expectations that we want to win, and that’s it. We have to do more, so maybe that’s not enough. We have to do more, there’s nothing else. We have to do our very best,” Mikel Arteta Arsenal manager said.
“When you do that, you can rest in peace. Today we really certainly tried to do our very best, but we weren’t efficient enough against a team that is very well organised and we got punished because of our own mistakes as well.”
United last Sunday beat Manchester City 2-0 and the win against Arsenal is a massive boost to the club under former defender Michael Carrick.
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, speaking to Sky Sports said: “We were having a decent spell.
“It’s only been 10 days we know it’s not going to be perfect. You can’t expect to come here and dominate the ball. We’re just starting off and it’s a good starting point, but we need to start putting some layers on top, and we’ll try to do that in the coming weeks.”
