Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s first in the series of the Golden League is likely to clash with the Niger Delta Games billed for Benin City, but officials said there would be no problems managing the two dates.
The Golden League is billed for February 20-21 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City, while the second edition of the Niger Delta Games also begin on February 20 and runs till on the 27th at the same venue.
“The Golden League will go on as scheduled the AFN is working towards a first successful outing for the season,” said AFN head coach Solomon Aliyu.
“We are quite aware of the Niger Delta Games beginning at the same venue, we are going to be able to manage the event.”
However, it remains to be seen whether the Golden League will take off as scheduled as there are no indications preparations have started towards having the meet take off the ground.
Meanwhile the AFN is looking to kick start early preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Glassgow July 23- August 2 and the World Junior Championships August 2-9 in Eugene USA, with camping planned for Asaba Delta State.
The AFN is hoping to collaborate with the National Sports Commission to get the programmed going as early as March with some home-based athlete and coaches.
