Senegalese fans facing trial in Rabat for their alleged participation in a pitch side fiasco will appear in Court February 5.
They were accused of disorderly conduct and vandalism during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations final game between the hosts Morocco and Senegal. They had been remanded in police custody awaiting trial since they were arrested after the final on January 18.
Their case has been made worse by lawyers who are on strike in Morocco, but according to reports, the Senegalese government has made an arrangement for the fans to be represented by a team of Senegalese lawyers.
“The strike by our colleagues in Rabat is still ongoing, but we will be present for the hearing on February 5 to ensure the rights of the Senegalese citizens are fully protected,” a representative of the legal team said.
The fans became enraged following what they perceived as bias officiating by the match referee who had denied their team a goal and then awarded a penalty kick in favour of the Moroccan team in injury time.
The Teranga Lions players in protest had walked off the pitch, but came back to continue, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, and Senegal went to score a back breaking goal to emerge AFCON 2025 Champions.
The case has drawn significant diplomatic and legal attention, with Senegalese officials working closely with Moroccan authorities to manage the situation and ensure due process for those involved.
