Senate president Godswill Akpabio’s political billboards is causing friction between the Ibenos and the Ekids in Eket Local Government of Akwa Ibom State.
The Eket people want the billboards out of their communities since according to them, Senator Akpabio does not represent them in the Nigerian Senate neither has he uplifted their communities since becoming Senate president.
However, according to a statement the Ibeno elders forum the people of Eket are suffering from inferiority complex and cannot understand that Senator Akpabio was a national figure and not a local politician.
“The Ekid People are not victims of neglect. What is driving this hatred is envy of Senator Akpabio’s influence, acceptance and national relevance. This is political emptiness and an inferiority complex masquerading as activism,” said Mr. Diamond Akpanika spokesperson for the Ibeno elders’ forum.
“Senator Akpabio is not just a senator for Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District; he is the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. By virtue of that office, his impact is national,”
He added that the Eket people have been antagonistic of laudable projects meant for their communities. He listed Amakpe Refinery, Qua Steel, Dr Pepper Project, Chinese market investments, BUA Refinery, East–West Road, NAF Air Base and the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, which have allegedly been sabotaged by them through petitions and protests.
