A magistrate’s court in Jos on Wednesday sentenced a 47-year-old mason, John Chigozie, to six months in prison for stealing a cooking pot.
The magistrate, Irene Pati, who sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the charge, however, gave him the option of a fine of N30,000.
The prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on January 29 at the Agada Biu Police Station by the complainant, Tina Jonathan.
Mr Gokwat said the convict entered the complainant’s house and stole an aluminum pot valued at N15,000 before he was caught.
He said that the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.
Also, a 28-year-old trader, Kabiru Ibrahim, was sentenced to two years in prison for stealing a motorcycle.
Magistrate, Irene Pati, who sentenced the convict who pleaded guilty to the charge, also gave him the option of a fine of N100,000.
She also ordered the convict to pay N500,000 as compensation or, in default, spend another six months in prison. NAN
