Presidential aspirant in the upcoming 2027 elections, Peter Obi and hundreds of other protesters Monday stormed the premises of the National Assembly to demand a reversal of the Senate’s decision on real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The Senate stirred up nationwide controversy last week when it revealed its resolutions of the Electoral Act for the 2027 general elections. Nigerians see the decision by the Senate to downplay electronic transfer of results as an open door to election rigging.
Though the Senate president Godswill Akpabio said the last has not been heard of the Electoral Act, the protesters insist that lawmakers must explicitly include “real-time electronic transmission” in the proposed legislation.
On Monday student groups, civil societies, opposition parties and the ‘Obidient movement’ gathered at the National Assembly to give the lawmakers a piece of their minds.
“Allow the elections to go through the normal process. Whoever wins, we would accept,” Obi said as the demonstrators chanted solidarity slogans and songs.
“So, why are you bringing this confusion?”
However, a joint security presence prevented the marchers from gaining entrance into the premises of the National Assembly.
Meanwhile the Senate has planned an emergency plenary sitting for Tuesday, February 10, following the uproar.
In the notice, Emmanuel Odo, clerk of the senate, said the sitting was convened on the directive of Godswill Akpabio, president of the senate.
It had on Wednesday, adjourned plenary till February 24.
