Eighteen Senegalese football fans have been handed prison terms ranging from three months to one year after being found guilty of disorderly conduct at final match of the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
The fans had been held in custody since January 18 and a Rabat court Thursday handed the sentences after they faces charges of rioting, which include harassing security forces, damage to sports equipment, a pitch invasion and throwing projectiles.
The supporters had previously denied committing any offences during the chaotic match, which ended with Senegal winning 1–0 in extra time.
The public prosecutor’s office at the Rabat primary court, represented by a deputy to the king’s prosecutor, asked the court to convict the Senegal supporters alongside an Algerian national who was also detained in connection with the incident.
In his submissions during Thursday’s hearing, the prosecutor said all the defendants, who appeared in custody, were involved in acts of hooliganism.
