Former Manchester United goalkeeper is opening to joining Newcastle United after being forced out Old Trafford in the summer window.
Newcastle are facing a goalkeeper crisis after number one Nick Pope suffered a shoulder injury in their 1-0 win over Manchester United last Saturday. Pope would be out for as much as for five months. And according to reports manager Eddie Howe is keen to find a replacement in De Gea who is a free agent.
Although De Gea was initially reluctant to return to the Premier League, the Spaniard is believed to be open to joining Newcastle should such an opportunity develop and the Tyneside club are understood to be aware of that.
It is six months now since De Gea left United and was replaced by Andre Onana, who has endured a torrid start at Old Trafford, and he has been happy to bide his time and wait for the right opportunity to come along.
De Gea has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe as well as Saudi Arabia. It is thought his wife Edurne, with whom he has a baby daughter Yanay, is keen to remain in Spain.
The manner of De Gea’s departure at Old Trafford did not go down well with some of his former United team-mates.
United had opted against triggering an option to extend his £375,000 a week contract by another year and were instead hoping to tie him to a new deal on significantly reduced terms.
But Ten Hag eventually decided in April that he wanted a new goalkeeper after a number of errors by De Gea and concerns about his distribution.
De Gea, nonetheless, won the Premier League Golden Glove last season for the most clean sheets (17).
