Super Eagles players have been celebrating their colleague Victor Osimhen who was voted the Serie A Player of the Year Award for the 2022/2023 season
Osimhen helped Napoli to their first Scudetto title in 33 years, in the process he scored 26 Serie A goals to top the chart and also breaking George Weah’s record as the highest-scoring African in the Italian top flight in the process. He became the first African to ever win the AIC award, joining the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo, Cristiano Ronaldo and last year’s winner Rafael Leao as recipients of the prize.
He was crowned Monday night as Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) Footballer of the Year to the delight of his family, friends and fans.
Super Eagles teammates Odion Ighalo, Victor Boniface, Taiwo Awoniyi, Simy Nwankwo, Moses Simon, Onazi Ogenyi, Kingsley Micheal, Troost- Ekong, sent their congratulations troto the former Golden Eaglets star.
In his reaction Osimhen said on his X page: “Thank you @grangadelcalcioaic for the recognition and awards, thank you my family, friends and supporters for your votes and unending support. God is the Greatest.”
Meanwhile, former Super Eagles captain Austin Jay Jay Okocha has tip Osimhen to win the African Football player of the year. The winners of the Caf awards will be announced on Monday, 11 December in Marrakech, Morocco.
“He [Osimhen] deserves it because for me, he was the most consistent player of last season. He deserves it,” Okocha said during a Bundesliga media round table.
