President Bola Tinubu Monday in Maiduguri warned Nigerian army officers to desist from carrying out reprisal attacks on police and the civilian populace no matter what provocation.
Tinubu who was speaking while declaring open the Chief of Army Staff Annual General Conference 2023 in Maiduguri, said military personnel must show character and respect the uniform. The Nigerian army is notorious for raiding police formations and jumping on civilians under the slightest provocations.
“To you military leaders, you have a responsibility to demonstrate great character in uniform.
“You have a point of the report, a point where you can ventilate your anger. Venting your anger against the police or civilians is not acceptable to any of us, the leaders. Please, let it end,” said Tinubu who made reference to a recent attack by army officers on the police in Adamawa State.
He said the accidental bombing of civilians by the army in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State must not be allowed to happen again.
“We weep at the passing of precious men, women and children; for those of us entrusted with the nation’s security it is severely painful to the falling of those we have sworn to protect,” he said.
“The incident must be thoroughly investigated and recurrence must be prevented.”
