King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace has revealed.
The King had been treated in hospital last month for a benign prostate condition, but during the stay in hospital, the palace said “a separate issue of concern was noted”.
“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” the statement released by the Palace Monday evening.
“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”
“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure,” the statement said.
“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”
He ascended to the throne on September 8, 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and his coronation was held in March last year.
“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” the statement read.
The King will continue his weekly audiences with the British Prime Minister, who was informed of the diagnosis prior to the public announcement.
