Cairo Ojougboh, a former House of Reps member and a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress has died while watching the African Cup of Nations semi-final clash between Nigeria and South Africa.
Ojougboh who is also a basketball enthusiast was said to have suffered a massive heart attack and passed on before he could get medical help.
“Cairo Ojougboh, a medical doctor died during the Nigeria vs.South Africa match,” said an associate of the politician.
“The incident happened when the penalty was awarded against Nigeria. Dr Ojougboh shouted and slumped due to massive heart attack when South Africa scored.”
President Bola Tinubu has sent a condolence message to the Ojougboh family and the government and people of Delta State over this tragic loss.
“While praying for the peaceful repose of the departed, President Tinubu comforts his family and urges them to find strength and hope in God Almighty, who presides over the affairs of men, as well as in the cherished memories and legacy of the late APC chieftain,” said a statement signed by Tinubu media and publicity adviser Ajuri Ngelale.
Also in Adamawa State a member of the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, was reported to have died while watching the game.
The youth corper identified as Samuel, from Kaduna State, slumpped and died during the penalty shootout.
The NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Mr. Jingi Dennis, confirmed Samuel’s death on Thursday morning in a telephone conversation.
The coordinator said, ”I received the news of his death last night. I hope to have more details today.
“According to his colleagues who went with him to watch the match, the late corps member told them that he didn’t like watching penalty shootout. He then bowed his head and all of a sudden, he collapsed.
”He was confirmed dead at the General Hospital in Numan by the doctor.”
