World record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan is the only world elite athlete participating in the African Games, but the three times African champion says there is no reason to shun the ‘Ghana 2023’ sports fiesta.
Amusan who was speaking after leading the Nigerian women 4x100m quartet to gold at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, submitted that she was happy competing in the Games adding that she is not the one that would turn down a chance to compete.
“I see no reason why I shouldn’t be here, it’s a national assignment,” Amusan said with excitement flashing in her eyes.
“I run for a living; I don’t know why people expect me to choose which competition I should compete in. I compete when it is time to compete, there is nothing like this is the African Games. Why should I be here?
“I represent myself, Africa and Nigeria as a whole.
“I’m happy to be here competing, the support from Nigerians has been massive.”
Amusan ran 12.89seconds to complete a hat-trick of gold since 2015. She later joined the women’s 4x100m on short notice and did not fail to deliver.
Speaking on winning the 100m hurdles gold back to back Amusan gushed: “It sounds so good three beeps!”
Looking ahead to the Olympics in Paris she added: “It is one race at a time; I am not under any pressure. We keep on working till we get to Paris.”
