Ese Brume remains unbeaten in the continental contest after she topped the African Games long jump event clinching the gold for the second time in a row.
The much expected contest between Brume and Ruth Usoro and a Nigerian 1,2,3 did not materialise as Usoro who had earlier won triple jump gold was not in full steam today.
Besides Burkina Faso’s Jasmine Marte Koala crashed the Nigerian expectations. She gave Brume a run for the gold, but the three times African champion’s leap of 6.92m was a mark too long for the rest of the women. Koala took the silver with 6.81m. Prestina Oluchi Ochonoghor took the bronze with a jump of of 6.67 a shade better than her personal best of 6.66m.
Usoro was fourth with 6.62m.
“She was tired out by the triple jump. It is usually difficult to do the triple jump and then participate in long jump,” former triple jumper Olu Sule said.
Ochonoghor was excited taking the bronze and improving on her jump. “It’s exciting winning the bronze in my first African Games outing and Moreso improving my personal best with one millimeter,” said the former junior athlete.
