As preparations move to higher gears for this year’s Mabel Madojemu Athletics Championships the performances of Prestina Oluchi Oshonoghor and Faith Osamuyi at the 13th African Games in Ghana continues to thrill organizers of the catch them young programme.
The two athlete participated in the maiden edition of the Mabel Madojiemu Schools Championships in 2019 and have grown to be worthy representatives of Nigeria at the international events.
Oshonoghor won a bronze medal in the women long jump with a personal best of 6.67m, while Osamuyi finished fourth in the 100m hurdles, she was pushed out the podium by Tinashe Kamangirira of Zimbabwe with a time of 13.59 seconds, Osamyuyi ran 13.77seconds in the heats she had clocked 13.55seconds in a race won by Tobi Amusan with 12.89 seconds.
“It is a thing of joy that these athletes are doing well at the senior level within a short time,” said Princess Mabel Madojiemu a former 400m national champion and Olympics 2004 4x400m squad member.
“That is the essence of the championships and nothing gives me pleasure that seeing athletes from the programme in the international scene. I was discovered running in grassroots meets too,”
The 2024 Championships is billed for April 25 and over 50 schools from Edo State are registered for the competition which has turned up a lot of junior athletes for Edo State.
