US telecoms firm C Spire has pulled out all its adverts from the Paris 2024 Olympics following the depiction of the “Last Supper” during the Opening Ceremony on Friday.
Christian groups have condemned the parody that had drag queens and dancers choreograph the Last Supper.
“We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics,” C Spire posted on X on Saturday.
“C Spire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics.”
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves publicly supported C Spire’s decision. “I am proud to see the private sector in Mississippi step up and put their foot down.
“God will not be mocked. C Spire drew a common-sense, appropriate line,” he said.
Also French left-wing party France Unbowed (LFI) leader, Jean-Luc Melenchon, said that the dance drama was a “mockery of the Christian Last Supper.”
“I didn’t appreciate the mockery of the Christian Last Supper, the final meal of Christ and his disciples, which is foundational to Sunday worship. Of course, I’m not getting into the criticism of ‘blasphemy.’ That doesn’t concern everyone.
“But I ask: what’s the point of risking offending believers? Even when one is anticlerical! We were speaking to the world that evening. Among the billion Christians in the world, how many good and honest people are there for whom faith provides help in living and knowing how to participate in everyone’s life, without bothering anyone?” he said.
