President Bola Tinubu’s administration has been accused of repressing opposition to its policies after the Department of State Services arrested and later released Nigeria Labour Congress president Joe Ajaero.
United Kingdom’s Trade Union Congress said it has been outraged by Ajaero’s arrest by the DSS stating that it was an act of intimidation and a violation of trade union freedoms.
“Joe was released last night, but it is clear that his ordeal is not yet over,” said a statement by the UK TUC.
“Nigeria’s trade unions still have our solidarity,” the TUC stated firmly, adding, “We condemn the actions of the Nigerian government and demand that they end their persecution of Joe Ajaero.”
Meanwhile, the DSS has also released Ajaero’s travelling document. A lawyer from the Femi Falana chambers collected the passport Tuesday in Abuja.
The secret police released Ajaero’s passport on Tuesday through Abubakar Marshall, a lawyer from the Femi Falana chambers.
