The Police in Lagos State Sunday morning teargassed #EndSARS protesters, who had gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate to mark the fourth anniversary of the protests that killed several Nigerian youths.
Carrying placards and banners the protesters denounced police brutality and demanded for justice for those who lost their lives, maim by police action and still in detention after four years. They also ask the government to carry out reforms it promises in the wake of the protests in 2020.
Displaying banners and placards, they demanded Justice for the victims of police brutality and the implementation of reforms promised by the government.
A group that participated in the demonstrations Youth Rights Campaign said 22 activists have been detained by the police.
“We demand their immediate and unconditional release. We understand that they are presently detained at SCID Panti Yaba,” said a statement signed by Francis Nwapa, YRC national secretary.
“The protesters had demanded the release of all #ENDSARS protesters still in detention after four years.
“They also demanded the immediate the report of the Judicial Panel which includes adequate compensation of the victims of #ENDSARS.
“This arrest is a continuation of brutal repression which has been the standard response of Bola Tinubu government against dissent and peaceful protest.
“We call on labour movement, civil society organisations and youth groups not to be intimidated but be prepared to mobilise mass resistance against democratic attacks by Tinubu government as well as its anti-poor neo- liberal policies.
“We also demand the immediate release of all still in detention in connection with #EndBadGovernance protest accords the country and dropping of trumped charges against Adaramoye Michael Lenin and 10 others.”
He listed those arrested; they include Hassan Taiwo Soweto YRC spokesperson, Ilesanmi kehinde, Uadiale Kingsley, Osopale Adeseye T, Olamilekan Sanusi, Osugba Blessing, kayode Anaheim, Michael Adedeji, Jennifer Rita Obiora, Orunsolu Oluremi (Renyte Goonz), Prof Seyi Akinde, Akin Okunowon Aluta, Ugochukwu Prince, Aishat Omolara, Abiodun Olamide Thomas, Ogbu Obinna Ferdinald, Aghedo Kehinde Stephen, Duroorike Olawale, Isaac Obasi, Funmilayo Jolade Ajayi, Gideon Adeyeni and Afeez Suleiman.
