President Bola Tinubu embarrassed by the arraignment of teenagers who participated in the #EndBadGovernace protests in August 2024 on charges of treason and terrorism, has ordered their immediate release.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this in Abuja while speaking to media representatives at the Presidential Vila in Abuja.
“The President has directed that all minors be released on the and also reunited with their families anywhere they are in the country,” Mr. Idris said
“A committee has been set up to look at the issues surrounding their arrest, detention and release. All the law enforcement agents related to the case will be investigated and anyone found wanting will be brought to book,” he said.
Idris said the President directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to immediately commence the process of securing release of the minors.
Tinubu came under fire last week when the 76 kids were arraigned at the Federal High Court, looking unkempt and disoriented some of them fainted while taking their plea. More outrageous was when the presiding judge granted them a N10m bail bond. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun later stated that the minors staged the fainting episode to make the government look bad.
Play acting or not, the pitiable photos of the kids spreading all over the regular and social media drew a back lash from home and abroad.
