Chief of Army Staff Lt General Taoreed Lagbaja has died at 56 of ill health on Tuesday in Lagos.
His passing was confirmed Wednesday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga Wednesday.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, regrets to announce the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, at age 56.
“President Tinubu expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time. He wishes Lt. General Lagbaja eternal peace and honours his significant contributions to the nation,” said Mr. Onanuga in a statement.
General Lagbaja who was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu was reported dead in late October, but Defence Headquarters quickly dispelled the rumours, insisting that the CAS was on annual leave.
Lt. General Lagbaja an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, demonstrating his dedication to professional growth and excellence in military leadership. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and two children.
President Tinubu appointed Lt General Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff last Wednesday.
