Impatient Nigerian football fans are not amused by the Super Eagles’ lethargic form in their World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations campaign. But Coach Austin Eguaveon has asked for more patience with an explanation on why the team has continued struggle.
Coach Eguaveon speaking during a chat with Segun Odegbami’s Eagle 7 FM affirmed that the star-studded Super Eagles have not been their best because of the little time they have to train and bound together ahead of their games.
He acknowledged that he had a strong team but making them work as a unit remains a challenge to the coaches.
“We don’t have time to train… we have players who come two or three days before the matches and it is difficult to get things right,” Eguavoen said.
“If we find the time to train for a longer period together, we can put things right. For now, we might not be playing good football, but it is important that we are picking the points and getting the results.
“When we are through with the qualifiers, we would look for the time to work on the team that will make Nigeria proud.
“Nigerians should be patient; we would put the team together. We might be operating individually, but we can also operate collectively.”
He said the players have it in the back of their minds that they need to put in their very best and win games so that they can put the smile on faces of Nigerians.
“I have always pleaded with the players to sustain the tempo of winning games, and they all agree with me.
“Because winning our games have far more implications. It is not just about making Nigerians happy; it is also good for business. “At this time things are difficult and lots of people are hungry football is the only thing that relieve people of their pains.
The Super Eagles will play their last game of the AFCON qualifiers against Rwanda Monday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Coach Eguaveon who admitted that the team made errors in Abidjan Cote d’Ivoire when they played against Benin Republic, is hopeful that the Super Eagles will stay focused and get the right result.
